The syndicate's year-end banquet was wrapping up. A blinding spotlight hit me.
"Time for our final toast. To the family's Biggest Dead Weight."
Dead silence for a second. Then, malicious laughter erupted across the room.
Silas’s new girl, Chloe, nudged my shoulder with a smirk. "Go get your award, Valentina. Don't be shy."
"I voted for you too. You earned it."
I stayed quiet. Looked at our Boss, Don Silas.
He knew exactly what I did for this criminal empire.
The untraceable money laundering. The late-night drinks to buy city councilmen. The premium casino licenses I secured through my own family ties.
I built the syndicate's most profitable underground cash flows. Blood, sweat, and tears.
But now, he just sat at the head table. Staring at me with cold eyes.
"What? You don't like the family's reward?"
I walked up to the stage. Took that cheap, humiliating plastic chip from a soldier.
Chloe handed me the mic. Smiled sweetly, playing the innocent angel. "Any speech, Valentina?"
A room full of mobsters in suits waited for the punchline.
I held the chip. Looked at the faces I had fed with clean money. Gave a soft smile.
"Since the family thinks this is all I'm worth... I'm out."
The laughter stopped instantly.
They thought I was just a lovesick woman throwing a tantrum.
Until the offshore laundering networks shut down. Until politicians and VIPs pulled their money out. They demanded their real contact. Otherwise, all protection was gone.
They totally panicked.
Chapter 1
Over a hundred core members looked at the shiny plastic trophy on stage.
"Congrats to Valentina, the Biggest Dead Weight!"
Applause. But I heard the mockery.
Whispers started. Phones went up to record.
I frowned at the stage. This prank award was for low-level street thugs. Why me?
"What are you waiting for, Valentina?"
Chloe stepped out from the crowd. Red dress. Cover-girl makeup.
She nudged my shoulder. Sweet voice. "Go on. Everyone voted for you."
The laughs died down. The vibe got weird.
"Are you okay?" She blinked, looking flawlessly innocent. "Don't take the results personally."
I turned to her. Calm tone. "What do you want?"
"I just think everyone should know the reasons." She pulled a folder from her clutch. Elegant like a stage play.
The music still played. But the talking stopped.
People formed a circle around us.
"I handle the books now. And I found some fun numbers." Chloe opened the folder. Clean financial sheets. "Our top earner hasn't visited the casinos in three months. Nightclub management? Zero."
She held up the paper. Everyone saw it.
"But her personal expenses?" She pulled out receipts. "The Mirage VIP lounge. Eight grand a pop. Westchester private golf club. Twenty grand a visit. And all those custom Michelin dinners."
Murmurs in the crowd. Some capos looked torn.
David, the laundering supervisor, stared at his shoes. He wouldn't look at me.
Last year, the feds raided us. I used Senator Morrison to reassign those agents overnight.
Mark, the casino manager, hid in the back.
A rival gang almost killed him over a debt last month. I loaned him a hundred grand to save his life.
They remembered. But nobody spoke up.
"A total of 150 grand skimmed off the top." Chloe waved the ledgers. "So, she earned this award, right?"
Whispers got louder. Some clapped. More phones recorded.
I looked around. Then looked at the main table.
Silas sat there. Wearing the tux I bought him. Rocking the Patek Philippe I gifted him.
Three years ago, he was extorting bodegas in Brooklyn. I used my trust fund and connections to make him Don.
Those "skimmed" funds? Forty-five million in political backing. An eighty-million laundering network about to launch. Lifetime immunity from federal judges and state senators.
But nobody wanted the truth.
Silas looked up. No guilt in his eyes. Just cold judgment.
"Looks like the award fits you, Valentina." His voice was deep and commanding. It echoed in the quiet hall. "But with this evidence, do you have an excuse?"
Chapter 2
I looked at Silas. Gave a soft laugh.
"An excuse?" I repeated. "Do you really want to hear it?"
Silas stared at me for a few seconds. His face turned hard.
"You feel no guilt at all." He stood up. His voice filled the room. "As the Don, I must protect the family."
He looked around. Making sure everyone heard him.
"We have zero tolerance for skimming. No matter who it is."
Silas turned to David. David was faking busy with his papers. "Cut Valentina's access right now. Offshore wires, the slush funds, and the encrypted ledgers."
David’s hands shook. But he nodded. "Yes, Boss."
I looked at this man. He used to beg on his knees for my help with the IRS. Now he couldn't even look me in the eye.
"Also," Silas looked at Chloe, "you handle this financial cleanup. Every penny goes back to where it belongs."
Chloe's eyes lit up. Like she heard angels singing. "Got it, Boss. I'll fix the family's losses."
She sighed, acting like she felt sorry for me. "Rules are rules, Valentina. We have to be fair to the family. No excuses."
"Make it known," Silas added. "Blacklist her. Strip her rank. Let this be a warning to all."
I finally saw the whole setup.
This wasn't an audit. This was a coup.
Silas wanted my political network. The multi-million dollar immunity and clean channels.
Chloe wanted to step on my dead body to reach the top.
They thought I would break. Beg. Give it all up.
What a joke.
"Of course, this is just temporary." Silas faked mercy. "Cooperate. Confess. We might give you a second chance."
"But," he paused, "the syndicate must run. Hand over the VIP contacts and the rulebooks to Chloe. Your personal mess can't stop our business."
I stood up. Pulled a nice black ledger from my bag. Tossed it on the nearest table.
"Take it." I kept my voice flat. "Have fun with the big shots."
Silas practically jumped to grab the ledger. Greed shined in his eyes.
He didn't know. That book used dynamic encryption. Without the key in my head, it was just trash paper.
Twenty minutes later. I stood alone by the floor-to-ceiling windows in my office. Looking at the Manhattan night.
My phone buzzed like crazy.
A mass text hit every capo's phone: "Valentina is out. Caught stealing."
The rumors spread fast. Breaking Omertà. Ruining our name.
I heard whispers in the hall.
"Can't believe she did that..."
"Bought luxury bags with family cash..."
"Chloe saw right through her. Good eye..."
"Serves her right. Acting so high and mighty..."
The hitmen and capos used to kiss my feet. Now they smelled blood. Tearing my name apart like sharks.
Suddenly, someone kicked my door open.
Chloe walked in with two armed guards. Looking like a conqueror.
She walked to my desk. Slammed a file down.
"Valentina," she looked down at me. High on revenge. "The Boss confirmed these numbers. $157,423 in total."
"You have three days to pay it back." She paused. Loving the power trip. "Miss the deadline? Mob rules. We cut your street shares. Plus, we strip you to your underwear and throw you out on the street."
Chapter 3
I picked up the bill. Checked the total.
"$157,423." I read it softly. Looked up at Chloe. "You charged me retail?"
Chloe blinked innocently. "I'm just following protocol, Valentina. Every swipe is on record."
I smiled. "You missed one detail. I used my private Centurion Card. My concierge comps half the fees. The real cost was around 110 grand."
Chloe froze for a second. Then went back to being arrogant.
"Discounts? You used that card for family business. That makes it a family asset." She held out her hand. "Hand it over."
I looked at her greedy eyes. The audacity was insane.
"Also," Chloe looked around my office. Staring at my expensive imported desk. "Silas gave me the books. This office is mine now."
She walked to the window. Taking in the Manhattan view. "The penthouse hits different. You can move down to the lobby."
I stared at her quietly.
"You really want this office?"
"Well," Chloe tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, playing shy. "Silas insisted it fits my new title."
I nodded. Walked to the desk. Signed the bill without a fuss.
"As you wish."
I started packing. A few books. A photo frame. A tiny succulent.
Three years in this room. Almost zero trace of me left.
Chloe watched me. Pure victory on her face. "Hurry up. I'm moving in tonight."
I put the last thing in the box. Looked at her. "Enjoy your new job."
I left the office. Walked straight to the elevator.
Behind me, Chloe was already shouting at movers. Bringing in new furniture. She couldn't wait to sit on her throne.
The doors closed. I pulled out my phone. Dialed a number.
"Marcus? It's Valentina."
"Valentina! How are you? Heard things got messy. Need me to bring the boys and clean house?" Marcus was my lawyer and cleaner. His voice held deep, cold rage.
"Nothing serious. Just checking something. Can the family touch the VIP perks under my name?"
"No way in hell." Marcus sounded dead serious. "If it's under your trust fund, no one can touch it. Need me to prep anything?"
"Get all the wire logs and meeting tapes ready. If they want to sue or play dirty, I'm ready."
"Done. Anything else?"
I walked out to the underground garage. "One more thing. Call real estate. I'm taking back the Midtown Manhattan property."
"Which one?"
"The five-star hotel. Their HQ. The friendship is over. Tell them tomorrow. The lease is dead."
I hung up. Pulled another file from my bag.
The deed to this hotel. The syndicate's headquarters and underground casino. The buyer's name was mine.
Three years ago, I wanted to protect Silas's fragile ego. I bought the building through a shell company. Rented it to his mob for 30 grand a month.
Market rent for a spot like this? 250 grand a month.
I remember the day we signed. Silas said, "Valentina, we got so lucky. A prime spot for our HQ."
I just smiled and said, "We sure did."
Looking back, I was a total idiot.
I started my car. Drove out of the garage.
Passing the lobby, I saw movers throwing things in the trash.
My ergonomic chair. A three-grand German masterpiece.
I shook my head and drove off.
Ten minutes later. An Instagram ping.
I stopped at a red light. Opened the app.
Chloe posted a selfie. Sitting at my old desk. Holding champagne. Smiling like a fool.
The caption: "Finally running the show! New beginnings! Level up! #BossBabe #Blessed #MobWifeLife"
We work in the shadows. Flexing a mob base on social media is a death wish.
But she didn't care. Power went to her head.
Dozens of likes and fake comments already.
I kept a straight face. Liked the post.
Enjoy it while it lasts. Let's see how long she keeps that chair.
Chapter 4
9:00 AM the next day. Jessica, Silas's personal fixer, tapped on my desk.
She held a file. Looking nervous and awkward.
"Valentina, this is... your new assignment." She couldn't even look at me. "One-week probation. Lobby security. You log in the street soldiers and pat them down for wires."
I took the file. Scanned it.
The written orders were a pure insult. Dumping me from top earner to a lobby rat. A massive slap in the face in our world.
"Also," Jessica cleared her throat, "Chloe needs all the core VIP files. Their numbers and habits."
I nodded. "Sure. Of course."
"She's waiting in the penthouse." Jessica ran off. Like she was scared to be seen with me.
I rode the elevator up. Pushed open my old doors.
I almost laughed out loud.
My clean, minimal office was dead.
Gold baroque furniture everywhere. Tacky oil paintings. Heavy velvet curtains.
It looked like a cheap pimp's living room.
Chloe sat behind the decorated desk. Wearing a brand-new Chanel suit. Pearl necklace.
She gave me a bright, welcoming smile.
"Valentina! Come in. How do you like my new office?" She gestured around proudly. "Sit down. Let's talk clients."
I sat across from her. Waiting.
"First, Arthur Wellington." Chloe pulled a file. "A top-tier VIP. 80 million interstate smuggling route. Give me the details."
I smiled. Handed her a poison apple with a straight face. "Arthur is special. He loves golf."
"Golf?" Chloe's eyes lit up. "Easy. I'll set up a game."
"He loves the Westchester Country Club." I kept talking. "He plays every weekend. Get close to him there, and the deal is done."
Chloe scribbled fast. "Westchester. Got it. Anything else?"
"He has a bad temper. Hates interruptions." I added. "But if he trusts you, he pays big."
"Perfect!" Chloe shut the folder. "I'll go there tomorrow."
I stood up. "Any other questions? If not, I have to pat down thugs at the front desk."
"Sure. Run along." Chloe waved me off. Like a maid.
I left the building. Drove straight to the Westchester Country Club.
It was in the New York suburbs. A family property.
Members only. Top one percent.
I walked into the lobby. Right into the manager's office.
Robert jumped up. "Miss Valentina! What brings you here?"
"Update my membership." I sat down. "From now on, nobody enters under my name. Unless I'm here."
Robert looked confused. "Like... a total ban?"
"Total ban." My tone was ice. "If anyone claims they know me, reject them. Treat them as trespassers."
"Understood." Robert typed away. "Anything else?"
"If someone asks for Arthur Wellington, play dumb. If they barge in, let them. Let Mr. Arthur handle it."
Robert nodded. "Copy that."
Done. I walked outside to call my driver.
A black bulletproof Maybach pulled up next to me.
The window rolled down. Silas and Chloe.
Silas was driving. Wearing shades.
Chloe was in the passenger seat. Fixing her lipstick. She gave me a fake gasp.
"Oh my," Chloe covered her mouth in fake surprise. "Valentina? Are you waiting for the bus? Do you need a ride?"
Silas laughed too. "Exile looks rough on you."
"We just ate at Le Bernardin." Chloe bragged. "Pre-celebrating. Arthur signs the 80-million deal tomorrow!"
She paused. Looking for my reaction. "Thanks for the tip. Super helpful."
"Oh, right." She remembered. "You have two days to pay up. Every single cent."
The engine roared. Silas hit the gas. The luxury car sped off. Leaving me with exhaust fumes and laughter.
I stood by the road. Watched the car vanish.
My face turned to ice.
Go ahead. Arthur hates stupid people ruining his golf swing.
Chapter 5
For the next week, I played the perfect grunt.
Showed up early. Left late.
I sorted trash papers. I patted down goons with a deadpan face. I laid low like a real street rat.
Up in the penthouse, Chloe lived her best life.
New designer fit every day. Prada on Monday. Versace on Tuesday. Saint Laurent on Wednesday. Rotating Hermès bags. Telling the world she made it.
Her Insta was worse. Every two hours, a new post.
"Busy mob life #GirlBoss #Grind"
"Power lunch with VIPs #WomenInBusiness #Elite"
"Late nights for the big project #Hustle #WorthIt"
Dozens of likes. Fake hype.
She was addicted. She thought social media clout meant real mafia power.
But reality hit hard.
Tuesday. I heard her panicking on the phone.
"Senator Morrison? It's Chloe. The new financial head... What? You don't know me? I can explain..."
"Judge Hamilton? About our immunity deal... What deal? You've never heard of me?"
Click. Click. Click. Hung up every time.
The politicians who used to kiss my ring? They froze Chloe out. Total ice.
Wednesday morning. Things got worse.
I sat at the front desk. Heard the finance guys freaking out.
"The cash pools are dry!"
"Atlantic City licenses are frozen!"
"Where the hell is the political slush fund?!"
David sprinted upstairs. Bringing the nightmare news to Silas.
Ten minutes later. Silas stormed downstairs like a rabid dog. Straight to my desk.
"Valentina!" His voice boomed in the lobby. "Get over here!"
I put down my pen. Followed him to the glass meeting room. The hitmen and guards stopped working. Watching the drama unfold.
Silas slammed the door. Turned to me. His face was purple.
"What the hell have you been doing all week?!" He hissed. "Not a single dime of clean cash came in! The politicians went ghost! We are going broke!"
I looked at him. Pure innocence. "I'm following family orders."
"What?!"
"I'm on probation. I'm reflecting on my sins." My voice was flat. "Plus, per the new mob rules, client relations belong to Chloe. I shouldn't step on her toes. It breaks Omertà."
Silas's temple throbbed. Veins popping out.
"Are... are you threatening me?"
"Threatening?" I chuckled softly. "I'm just a good entry-level grunt. Following the rules. Just like you wanted."
Silas choked on his rage. His fists shook. Ready to snap.
"You think we need you?" He finally barked. "Listen to me. I'll close Arthur Wellington's 80-million deal myself! I don't need a washed-up bitch like you!"
He walked to the door. Hand on the knob. Looked back.
"And from now on, don't show up here. You are excommunicated. Burned. All protection revoked!"
He threw the door open. Walked into the middle of the lobby. Yelled:
"Listen up! As of today, Valentina is dead to this syndicate!"
Dead silence.
Jaws dropped. Everyone froze.
I walked out of the room slowly. Under all their eyes. Went back to my desk to pack my few things.
My calm vibe freaked Silas out.
"You... you have nothing to say?" His voice shook a little.
I looked up. Smiled. "Good luck, Silas. Hope Arthur works out for you."
I went home. Poured a glass of red wine. Sat in my quiet living room.
I called Marcus.
"Marcus. The Midtown Manhattan lease. It ends tomorrow, right?"
"Yes, Valentina. Need me to draft the renewal?"
"No." I took a sip of wine. "Show the property to new buyers at 10 AM tomorrow."
Marcus sounded thrilled. "Perfect! That spot is hot. The Russian Bratva offered double the rent. They love the location."
10:00 AM. Westchester Private Country Club.
Silas tugged at his tight tie. He kept a death grip on the 80-million-dollar smuggling contract.
Arthur Wellington was right ahead on the green.
Signing him was the only way to cover the massive financial hole Valentina left behind.
Chloe clung tightly to Silas’s arm.
She wore a ridiculously revealing red dress today.
"Watch me, Boss," she gave him a smug wink. "I know exactly how to handle old men like him. I’ll make him sign."
Silas nodded. He gave her the green light.
They walked across the expensive turf. Arthur was standing in the sun, fully focused.
Feet apart. Shoulders relaxed. He raised his custom golf club, ready for the winning swing.
Right as the club came down, Chloe suddenly let go of Silas.
She rushed forward like a peacock in heat.
Her heels stabbed ugly mud holes into the perfectly manicured green.
"Mr. Arthur!" she yelled in a sickeningly sweet voice.
Arthur’s arm jerked.
