第1章
I’ve cheated on my boyfriend, Julian, three times.
The first time, I dumped him because he was broke and hooked up with his boss.
The second time, I thought he was getting too old, so I went after a younger personal trainer.
By the third time, I was just bored and wanted someone new. But right then, floating text flashed across my vision.
“She has no idea he’s the missing heir to a multi-billion-dollar empire.”
“Seriously. He gave her three chances to live in luxury, and she blew every single one.”
I froze and looked at Julian.
His fists were clenched and tears welled up in his bloodshot eyes.
"Are you sure you want to leave me?" he asked.
I shook my head, heart pounding.
"What if I said... I'm mostly done cheating now? Would you forgive me?”
Chapter 1
Julian looked at me like a heartbroken puppy.
A cold sweat broke out across my back.
He sighed, unable to stay mad at me.
"Tell me what you're unhappy with," he murmured. "I’ll change."
"If it’s money, I’ll take on another shift. If you don't like my face, I'll get more procedures done."
He buried his soft hair into my chest, his voice muffled and desperate.
"Just don't leave me. If you're really bored of me, I can change my look completely. We can start over from scratch, okay?"
The raw hope in his eyes stung and guilt washed over me.
Was I really that cruel?
I had treated him like a dog.
The first time I dumped him for being poor, he worked three jobs and bought me two cars just to win me back.
The second time I said he was getting old, he spent every penny he had on cosmetic treatments and personal trainers until I agreed to take him back.
I had taken his devotion for granted.
Every single time.
Tears blurred my vision. I was filled with remorse, but mostly, pure terror.
I had used up my third strike.
Now that he was heading back to inherit his family's fortune, he was definitely going to ruin me.
Julian saw me crying, and his voice began to shake.
"Don't cry, baby. If you really can't stand me... I... I can agree to the breakup..."
In the past, I would have told him to get out. I would have shoved him away just to hide my weakness.
But I was out of second chances. I couldn't risk throwing a tantrum anymore.
I timidly tugged at his sleeve. "Can we... not break up this time?
"If I said I’ve grown up and realized I need you, would you believe me?"
Julian froze. He nodded, completely dazed.
"Do you want to work out together tonight, then? I can finish my work early."
I shook my head wildly. "No! No, thank you!"
Our so-called workouts were just my cruel ways of torturing him.
I used to sit on his back while he did push-ups.
If he slacked off, I whipped him. I wouldn't even let his sweat touch my clothes.
I grabbed Julian’s face, forcing him to look me in the eye.
"Julian, whether you believe me or not, I'm going to treat you right from now on."
Julian smiled, his palm gently cupping the back of my head.
"As long as you don't leave me, anything you do is fine."
He kissed my forehead and walked into the bathroom, leaving me alone in the living room.
I slumped onto the couch.
Even though the breakup was off, I couldn't cheer up.
He was so good to me.
How could I have been such a monster?
Suddenly, bright floating text began to scroll rapidly across my vision.
“Wait, he just forgave her? That’s wrong!”
“The main female lead already showed up, he should be dumping her right now!”
“Don't panic! The main girl stayed up all night writing a step-by-step guide on how to win him over. She's taking him down tomorrow.”
“So what if the side character won't break up?”
“Once he reveals his real identity, he's destroying her whole family anyway. It's her destiny.”
My pupils shrank.
Destroy my family?
Did Julian hate me that much?
Tears spilled down my cheeks. I couldn't stop them.
How could I fix this?
Who was this other girl anyway?
This house is huge, can't all three of us just live together?!
Julian stepped out of the bathroom and wrapped his arms around me from behind.
"What's wrong? Did I make you upset again?"
"No," I lied frantically. "I just don't want to go to work tomorrow."
Julian let out a visible sigh of relief and chuckled.
"Then, tell your boss. Stay home and let me take care of you."
"Okay..."
"Actually, there's something I need to tell you..." Julian’s tone suddenly turned tense.
"What if... I... I lied to you about something?"
The air in front of me glitched and more floating text flooded my vision.
“Is he revealing his billionaire identity already?!”
“Where's the drama in that?!”
“He’s dropping the fake identity!”
“They HAVE to break up today so he can start the romance plot with the main girl tomorrow!”
Before Julian could say another word, I whipped around and clapped my hand over his mouth.
"Don't say it! I don't want to know. If you had lied to me, then you need to keep it a secret for the rest of your life!”
Chapter 2
I refused to let him say the words.
I didn't want to hear him break up with me.
And I definitely didn't want to hear how he planned to destroy me once his real identity was out.
My mother's treatment was in its final stage. I needed the money, and I needed his support.
I couldn't just walk away.
There was only one Montgomery family in the elite business world, and their sole missing heir was worth billions.
Rumors said he was ruthless and cold-blooded.
A single word from him could erase an entire company overnight.
No. I had to buy time until my mother finished her treatment, then we could leave together.
If the messages were right and the other girl was starting her move today... what if they just didn't meet?
"Julian," I asked, "can you skip work today? I want you to stay home with me."
Julian blinked in surprise, then shook his head.
"I promised my team I would help finish up a big project today. Give me just one day, baby. I'll take tomorrow off for you."
I pulled away instantly, squirming out of his arms.
He had never rejected me before. Never.
Was that girl really that special?
Special enough that he was already falling out of love with me?
I curled into a ball, burying my face in my knees, refusing to talk to him.
Julian couldn't stand the cold shoulder.
He scooped me up and carried me straight to the bedroom.
"I really can't miss today. How about I transfer you some money so you can go out for dessert with your friends?"
The tears fell harder. My heart sank deeper.
He was blowing me off with money.
Of course, he was secretly a billionaire. Money meant nothing to him.
Usually, if I threw a fit, he’d spend all night comforting me.
But today, he just sat beside me, scrolling through his phone and replying to messages.
Worse, the floating text warned me he was texting her.
“The new girl is amazing! It’s only been three meetings and she already got him.”
“He’s not even bother comforting the side characters anymore.”
“So sweet! They’re planning their schedule for today. First official date incoming!”
“Wait, isn't anyone concerned? He hasn't broken up with his current girlfriend yet. Isn't this cheating?”
“To the person above: the current girl cheated on him three times! He’s just getting a little pay-back, so what’s the big deal?”
I pulled the blanket over my head, shutting my eyes tightly to ignore the floating text.
The first time I met Julian was at a tiny clinic in our rural hometown.
Rain was pouring heavily. I had brought my sick mother in for a checkup.
A neighbor carried him in, covered in mud and blood, completely unconscious.
He must have fallen off a hiking trail.
The doctor said he was lucky just to have minor injuries, but he had lost his memory.
I grabbed my mother’s hand, my eyes lighting up the moment I saw his face. He was stunning.
"Mom," I whispered, "forget the blind dates. I want him."
At first, Julian was quiet and distant.
He only remembered his first name. But he was smart, capable, and learned everything fast.
Then my mother’s illness got worse, and we had to move to the city.
The pressure drove me crazy.
I became deeply attached to him, constantly acting out and pushing his limits just to test if he’d stay.
My thoughts drifted until sleep finally took over.
When I woke up, the sun was high in the sky.
The side of the bed was empty. I stared at the ceiling, feeling hollow.
After today, Julian wouldn't be mine anymore.
Six years of breaking up and getting back together was finally coming to an end.
Suddenly, the blanket was pulled back. I sat up, startled.
Julian smiled down at me like he always did. "Morning, princess. Lunch is served."
"You... didn't go to work?"
He pretended to be deep in thought until I threw a pillow at him.
He laughed aloud. "It's rare for you to miss me so much. I decided to work from home today."
I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder. "Why are you so good to me?"
We were about to walk downstairs when the floating text violently flashed again.
“We have to thank the side character for this! The main girl came straight to his house now, double the romance!”
“If things go well, they might end up in bed today and have a house full of kids later!”
“The side character should just pack her bags and leave. It’s going to be embarrassing when he kicks her out.”
I turned toward the living room like a robot.
A polished, gorgeous girl in a delicate white dress was standing there, locking eyes with me.
"Hi there," she said with a sweet smile. "Julian invited me over.”
Chapter 3
After the initial shock subsided, anger and grief churned wildly inside my chest.
I refused to let him go out on a date, so he brought her straight to our house just to push my boundaries?
Six years together, Julian, and you wouldn’t even grant me a decent goodbye.
I held back my tears and walked out as fast as I could.
I didn't want to stay in this house for another second. It didn't belong to me anymore.
Julian came straight out of the kitchen and grabbed my wrist.
"What's wrong? You're leaving without eating lunch? Did something happen to your mom?"
"No. The air in here is choking me. I'm leaving."
Julian frowned, his warm palm lightly resting against my forehead.
"You don't have a fever, do you? Let me drive you to the clinic for a quick check."
The more he spoke, the tighter my chest felt. Waves of hurt washed right over me.
He had already brought another girl home to flirt with, so why pretend to care about me?
I couldn't help asking, "Who is she? Why is she in our home?"
"She's my project assistant. Working from home makes communication tricky, so she came over to help me finish some files."
I didn't buy it. No field team had an assistant that dressed that elegantly.
The floating text popped up again, revealing she had brought him flowers.
I glanced sideways, and a vibrant bouquet of red roses stung my eyes.
“She nailed it with those roses! He was holding them and staring at them forever.”
“Doesn't matter who his ex was, his heart only beats for the new girl now. There's even a promise ring hidden in the bouquet, and he kept it!”
“So romantic! The ex must be regretting everything now. She cheated on him multiple times and forced him to beg. Disgusting.”
I let out a bitter smile. "Stop lying to me, Julian. I know everything."
His body stiffened. He reached out frantically to pull me into an embrace, but I pushed him away.
"Don't touch me. It's sickening. I don't want to look at you anymore."
I turned on my heel and bolted out the front door.
Tears mixed with sweat ran down my face. I covered my mouth to muffle my sobs.
Julian didn't chase after me. I couldn't tell if I felt disappointed or relieved.
I stopped by the riverbank.
The water reflected my face to be disheveled, messy, and pathetic.
Meanwhile, the floating text claimed they were already about to kiss.
“Wow, the new girl really knows what she's doing! She intentionally fell right into his arms, and his ears turned completely red!”
“He's wearing tailor-made gray trousers today... you guys know what I mean! Can't wait for the babies!”
“Wait, he pushed her away? What's going on? Don't tell me he still has feelings for his ex?”
“No way! Look at his phone, he's already looking at digital wedding invitations! He just wants to save himself for the wedding night!”
The floating texts kept throwing a full-on celebration, cheering for the impending wedding.
“Wait! The invitation is set for the day after tomorrow? Why is he in such a hurry?!”
“You don't get it, a man wants his bride in his arms as soon as possible. The ex running away was the best thing that could happen.”
I stared blankly as these floating comments narrated the love story of my partner and a complete stranger.
And they were using me as the tragic point of comparison.
I felt like a thief, peeking into someone else's happily ever after.
Yet all of this was supposed to be mine.
If only I hadn’t cheated again and again, and if only I hadn’t tortured him with my deep insecurities.
That happiness would have belonged to me.
I sat by the water alone until late into the night before slowly walking to the hospital.
On the way, my stomach churned with sharp pain. That's when I realized I hadn't eaten anything all day.
I hadn't felt this kind of stomach pain in years.
Ever since I got together with Julian, he had taken such good care of me that my chronic pain completely vanished.
It turned out I hadn't cured it. I was just loved so deeply that I never felt the pain.
It was too late, and all the convenience stores nearby were closed. I could only sit in the hospital breakroom, drinking hot water to numb the ache.
Suddenly, my phone screen lit up. The only emergency alert tone I had set belonged to Julian.
It was a text with a QR code for a digital wedding invitation.
“I was wrong, baby. I really hope you can come to this wedding.
“Let's meet up. Just give me one chance to explain.”
Explain what?
Explain how he fell in love with her at first sight, abandoned me, and decided to marry someone else?
Explain how amazing she was, proving why I wasn't good enough for him?
I didn't want to hear it, and I certainly didn't want to watch the person I loved most hold someone else's hand and say, "I do."
Did he send this knowing how much it would hurt?
Was this the very first step of his revenge?
I didn't open the QR code. I blocked his number instantly.
Then, I booked two one-way flight tickets for my mother and myself.
The wedding was the day after tomorrow, right?
That happened to be the exact day my mother finished her final treatment session.
I stayed on the hospital rooftop, letting the cold night wind blow against my face until dawn broke.
After that, I walked into my mother's room.
"Mom, let's leave the day after tomorrow. I don't want to stay here anymore."
My mother didn't ask questions.
She knew how obsessed I had been with Julian, and she knew how much pain I was in.
"Okay," she softly agreed. "Just the two of us, together for the rest of our lives."
My heart felt heavy and sour. "We'll get a dog too. That way, nobody will dare pick on us."
Time dragged on painfully and slowly. The sun set slowly, and the leaves fell without a rush.
During that time, Julian tried calling me dozens of times, but I didn't answer a single call.
The floating text said he was currently busy pampering his new girl, helping her pick out a wedding dress.
“The new girl is literally a goddess. She looks breathtaking in that gown.”
“He rented out the entire high-end resort in the city and spent a fortune rushing the photo shoots. The billionaire vibe is insane!”
If he was so busy, why did he keep calling me?
He probably just wanted to humiliate me by rubbing it in my face that I failed to appreciate what I had.
Eventually, exhaustion pulled me into a light sleep, where I dreamt of the day we first met.
When I woke up, my pillow was completely soaked with tears.
My mother gently patted my shoulder. "Let's go, sweetheart."
The journey into the big city had been terrifying, but the road back to our quiet hometown felt so peaceful.
Miraculously, the flight wasn't delayed.
My mother and I hurried through the terminal and barely made it in time.
Just as the gate agent scanned our boarding passes, a firm, familiar hand grabbed the handle of my suitcase.
I turned around, frowning, only to see Julian standing there.
Tears were welling up in his wide, expressive eyes.
"Why are you leaving?" he choked out. "Didn't you promise you were finally ready to rely on me?”
