The moment I discovered that my husband, Don Lucian DeLuca, was keeping a mistress, I poisoned him.
The poison bound him to an antidote only I controlled. If he went more than fifteen minutes without a dose, the toxin would enter his bloodstream and send his organs into rapid failure.
That left Lucian with no choice but to remain at my side day and night.
He seemed to have forgotten that before I became Donna Vivienne DeLuca, I had been a daughter of the Valenti family.
New York's crime families whispered that Donna Vivienne DeLuca was ruthless, a woman who would never tolerate a mistress beside Don Lucian.
Even my parents condemned me for my jealousy. They said I had damaged the reputations of every other Valenti daughter waiting to secure a marriage alliance.
But as long as I could keep Lucian and force him to honor our marriage again, I did not care what anyone thought of me.
Then Bianca Bellini's personal maid came pounding on the gates of the DeLuca compound.
She was sobbing as she begged Lucian to see Bianca one last time before she died in childbirth.
Lucian tore out of the compound like a man possessed and did not return all night.
The next day, he came back carrying Bianca's cold body in his arms.
With bloodshot eyes, he raised his gun and shot me in the throat.
“If you hadn't kept pushing me, Bianca and I never would have ended up like this.”
“You're going to pay for her death, Vivienne.”
Lucian ordered that Bianca be buried under the name Donna Bianca DeLuca.
Then he turned the gun on himself. In his final instructions, he ordered his men to place them together in the same crypt inside the DeLuca family mausoleum.
My body was dumped on an abandoned stretch of land and left unclaimed.
When I opened my eyes again, I had returned to the day I first discovered Lucian's mistress.
I glanced at the lace lingerie spread across the table and smiled calmly.
“If Don Lucian cares for her that much, bring her into the compound.”
***
Lucian's face lit up the moment he heard me.
Before noon, he had arranged a convoy of black SUVs.
Every vehicle was loaded with jewelry, custom couture, and expensive gifts for Bianca.
Lucian even opened the DeLuca family vault and removed the heirloom diamond set reserved for the Donna beside each successive Don.
He hired the most sought-after stylists in New York and assigned the DeLuca family's most trusted soldiers to escort her.
With the entire family watching, Lucian brought Bianca into the compound.
My personal bodyguard, Mara Quinn, trembled with anger on my behalf.
“If you and the Valenti family hadn't supported him, Lucian would still be a second-rate capo on the edge of the DeLuca organization, kept under the underboss's thumb.”
“Back then, his crew was close to being disbanded, and every business under his name was losing money.”
When the previous DeLuca Don died, he left no son and named no successor.
The family's underboss stepped in as acting Don, but several capos refused to accept his authority.
They went to war over the vacant position.
At the time, Lucian was the weakest capo among them.
It was my father, Don Valenti, who gave him money, gunmen, intelligence, and the support of allied families.
With the strength of the Valenti family behind him, Lucian eliminated the acting Don and his other rivals, eventually claiming the title for himself.
If I had not chosen him, he never would have become Don Lucian DeLuca.
Lucian had once saved me from drowning after a yachting accident. He performed CPR himself until I began breathing again.
That was how our relationship started.
To earn my father's approval, Lucian waited outside the Valenti estate for seven days.
He swore he would remain faithful to one woman for the rest of his life and that there would never be a mistress in our marriage.
Only then did my father approve the alliance.
Before the wedding, however, my father made Lucian sign a prenuptial agreement and a divorce settlement prepared in advance.
The terms were clear.
If Lucian ever betrayed me, the Valenti family would withdraw everything it had given the DeLucas, including its capital, port access, union connections, and political protection.
For years, worried that I might be mistreated inside the DeLuca family, my father had allowed the premarital trust under my control to cover the growing deficits in the DeLuca accounts.
As the convoy rolled into the compound, I opened the safe and removed the divorce papers Lucian had already signed.
“Mara, take these to my lawyer. Tell him to begin the formal proceedings.”
“Once I've settled every debt from my last life, we're going home to the Valentis.”
Mara's eyes brightened immediately.
As if afraid I might change my mind, she grabbed the folder and hurried out.
She had barely left the room when she ran into Lucian and Bianca.
Lucian had brought Bianca to me so he could formally place her under his protection and publicly recognize her as his mistress.
Mara gave them a cold glance without offering either of them a greeting.
Bianca frowned and tightened her hold on Lucian's arm.
“Lucian, how can someone serving the Donna show you such disrespect?”
“A woman who refuses to follow the rules should be thrown out of the compound.”
Mara did not flinch. She barely looked at Bianca.
“The Valenti family sent me here to protect Donna Vivienne. I am not a DeLuca soldier.”
“Don Lucian has no authority over me.”
She paused before turning her gaze fully on Bianca.
“As for you, you're nothing more than the Don's kept woman.”
The color immediately drained from Bianca's face.
She swayed and leaned against Lucian, her eyes filling with tears.
My attention shifted to the diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.
Lucian had once placed that heirloom set in my hands himself.
I had kept it locked inside the vault and had never worn it in public.
Now it hung around Bianca's neck.
Lucian gently wiped away the tears gathering in the corners of her eyes before turning on me.
“Vivienne, keeping someone so disrespectful at your side will eventually cause a conflict between our families.”
I set down my coffee and gave him a quiet laugh.
“Mara only answers to my father. There is nothing I can do about her.”
Lucian's expression darkened, but he could not argue.
My father was not only the man who had placed him in the Don's seat. He was also the one ally the DeLuca family still did not dare offend.
Bringing a mistress into the compound was already a public insult to the Valenti name.
If Lucian laid a hand on the woman my father had sent to protect me, he would risk starting a war between our families.
Mara gave Bianca one last cold look and turned to leave.
Then Lucian noticed the folder in her hand.
“Give me that.”

I did not want any complications before my lawyer formally filed the divorce papers, so I stepped forward and blocked Lucian's view.
“It's getting late.”
“Since Bianca is officially entering the compound today, she should complete the proper formalities first.”
“We wouldn't want to delay your celebration tonight.”
Only then did Lucian look away from the folder.
His expression softened with approval.
“As always, the Donna thinks of everything.”
Bianca rested one hand on her swollen belly and called Lucian's name in a soft, coaxing voice.
Lucian understood what she wanted immediately.
Under the rules of the DeLuca compound, a mistress meeting the Donna for the first time after receiving the Don's public protection was expected to kneel on one knee and offer her a glass.
The gesture acknowledged the Donna's authority within the family.
Lucian picked up the wine from the table, replaced it with alcohol-free sparkling wine, and placed the glass in Bianca's hand himself.
Then he spoke in a tone that allowed no argument.
“Bianca is carrying my child. She isn't steady on her feet.”
“She doesn't need to kneel. She can offer the toast while standing.”
A mistress who refused to kneel was refusing to acknowledge the Donna's position.
By allowing Bianca to remain standing, Lucian was showing everyone that the Don himself had given her permission to challenge my authority.
When Lucian's mother was still alive, I had also been pregnant.
She disliked me and refused to acknowledge everything the Valenti family had done for her son.
Every night, she forced me to kneel on the cold stone floor of the family chapel and pray. She also made me copy the entire Book of Psalms by hand.
My legs became so swollen that I could barely stand.
I begged Lucian to help me.
He told me that respecting his mother was part of my duty as his wife.
No matter how exhausted I was, I was expected to endure it.
Eventually, I lost consciousness inside the chapel.
When I woke, I had already lost our child.
It was not that Lucian was incapable of tenderness.
He simply had none for me.
I accepted the sparkling wine Bianca offered and dismissed them soon afterward.
The moment Bianca stepped through the doorway, she complained that her legs hurt.
Lucian immediately bent down and lifted her into his arms.
He held her securely and walked with measured steps so she would not feel the slightest jolt.
After I lost our child, Lucian had taken me to a Catholic chapel to light a memorial candle.
He had held my hand then, walking with the same steady steps.
When Mara returned from the lawyer's office, she could not stop smiling.
She stood beside me and repeatedly assured me that the lawyer had accepted the papers and that the formal proceedings were underway.
In my last life, after Lucian shot me, he left my body inside the room and ordered his men to guard Mara.
Mara escaped through a maintenance passage behind the compound, intending to reach the Valenti family and ask for help.
Lucian caught her before she could get away.
He ordered his soldiers to take her to the basement for questioning. Afterward, she was executed.
By the time I learned what had happened, she was already dead.
Looking at Mara now, alive and standing in front of me, I could not stop my eyes from filling with tears.
She assumed I was upset about the divorce.
Mara pulled me into her arms and gently patted my back.
“New York is full of heirs and young capos.”
“Don Valenti will have no trouble finding you someone far better than Lucian.”
She made me laugh, and I reached for her hand.
Hurried footsteps sounded outside the room.
A flushed maid rushed toward Bianca's rooms in the east wing, carrying a stack of fresh sheets and towels.
Mara looked away in disgust.
“She has barely entered the compound, and she's already determined to make sure everyone knows.”
Something suddenly returned to me.
In my last life, I had not left Lucian's side immediately after my death.
During that strange period, I had seen the child Bianca delivered.
The boy looked nothing like Lucian.
I turned to Mara.
“Find out which men Bianca had contact with before she entered the compound.”
“I also want the name of every doctor who has examined her during this pregnancy.”
Bianca did not come to my room until almost noon the following day.
She made no attempt to hide the marks on her neck. She merely rubbed her forehead as though exhausted.
“Donna Vivienne, I hope you'll forgive me for coming so late.”
“Lucian was so passionate last night that the servants had to change the sheets five times. I could barely get out of bed this morning.”
I took Bianca's hand with an expression of concern and turned to Mara.
“A pregnancy this far along should not be put under that kind of strain.”
“Mara, bring in the doctor. Bianca should be examined.”
Bianca smiled smugly and ran a hand over her belly.
Then she saw Dr. Elias Hart hurrying into the room.
Every trace of color vanished from her face.

Bianca jerked upright and immediately backed away.
She refused to let Dr. Hart come near her.
“Donna Vivienne, the pregnancy has been perfectly normal.”
“There is no reason for the doctor to examine me again.”
I shook my head and spoke gently.
“You're carrying Don Lucian's child. We cannot afford to be careless.”
“Dr. Hart is one of the most respected obstetricians in New York.”
“One examination will allow him to estimate how far along you are and confirm your expected delivery date.”
Bianca continued shaking her head.
As she backed away, she struck the corner of the table, lost her balance, and fell.
She clutched her stomach and cried out in pain.
Lucian's furious voice came from the doorway.
He strode across the room and stopped in front of me.
“Vivienne, what the hell are you doing?”
Bianca burst into tears as if her rescuer had finally arrived.
“Lucian, I'm frightened.”
“Donna Vivienne wouldn't let me leave. The baby has been fine, but she insisted on having this doctor examine me.”
“Does she want something to happen to our child?”
As soon as she finished speaking, Bianca clutched her stomach and collapsed into Lucian's arms.
Lucian glared at me and ordered his soldiers to escort Dr. Hart out of the compound.
He lifted Bianca into his arms and hurried away.
Before leaving, he looked back and warned me:
“If anything happens to Bianca or the baby, I will never forgive you.”
Mara's face flushed with anger.
She grabbed a cushion from the sofa and threw it toward the doorway after Lucian.
I let out a quiet laugh and watched Dr. Hart leave.
All I had done was bring in a doctor who had examined Bianca before, yet the sight of him had terrified her.
The child she was carrying clearly was not Lucian's.
Bianca did not wake until late that night.
Her sobs carried down the corridor, carefully pitched to sound as helpless as possible.
“Lucian, Donna Vivienne will never accept me.”
“Please let me leave the compound.”
“If you aren't here one day, the baby and I might not survive.”
Lucian sent for me.
The moment I entered the room, a mug of scalding coffee shattered beside my feet.
A shard cut my ankle.
I caught the flash of triumph in Bianca's eyes.
I dug my nails into my palm until tears rose in my own.
“If Don Lucian does not trust me, he can place Bianca in charge of the compound.”
“If she needs prenatal supplies, she can take them from the storerooms herself.”
“If she needs a doctor, she can arrange one herself.”
“She will never need my approval again.”
Lucian fell silent.
The DeLuca family still appeared powerful, but its financial deficit had been growing for years.
My premarital trust and the legitimate companies controlled by the Valentis had quietly covered the shortfall.
If I stopped managing those accounts, the failing businesses tied to Lucian's name would not keep the DeLuca family solvent for long.
Bianca bit her lip, unable to hide the greed in her eyes.
She tugged sweetly at Lucian's sleeve.
“Lucian, I think that's a wonderful idea.”
“I'm going to give you an heir soon anyway.”
“Once the baby is born, I'll return control of the compound to Donna Vivienne.”
Lucian hesitated before nodding.
I surrendered control of the compound accounts, security lists, and staff assignments.
Without looking at Bianca's smug expression, I turned and left.
That same night, Bianca dismissed every member of staff assigned to my rooms and had security escort them off the property.
The remaining servants immediately began trying to win her favor.
The meals delivered to me arrived cold. Some had already spoiled.
But when Bianca tried to withdraw money from the family accounts, she discovered that there was no available cash.
She smashed the decorations in her room before running to Lucian in tears.
Lucian somehow produced a large sum of money and deposited enough to cover the immediate shortfall.
However, the legitimate income attached to his name could not possibly cover Bianca's lavish gifts or the extravagant lifestyle she had maintained outside the compound.
I had Mara contact my father through the Valenti family's encrypted channel and ask him to trace the source of the money.
Then I bribed one of Bianca's maids and instructed her to report everything Bianca did.
Seven days later, three long knocks followed by one short sounded at my door.
I changed into a maid's uniform and entered Bianca's room through the service corridor.
