"I just rang the IPO bell for my 99th company when a bag came down over my head. The kidnappers? My birth parents — the ones who dumped me twenty years ago. Their orders? Take the fall for their spoiled fake daughter, who ""ruined"" a gift Don Rocci bought for his wife. Grovel. Strip. Crawl into his bed if you have to. Save our real daughter. They don't know the ""cruel Don"" is my sulking husband, Damiano Rocci. They don't know the ruined gift was for me. They cut my face. Rip my clothes. Livestream it for laughs. Then Damiano's car pulls up — and Ashford City learns exactly who I am."

第1章

My birth parents kidnapped me. They wanted me to take the fall for their fake daughter. I just rang the IPO bell for my 99th company. Then a bag came down over my head. I thought it was a ransom job. Instead, the hood came off and I was staring at the parents who dumped me twenty years ago. "Your sister ruined the birthday gift Don Rocci bought for his wife," my father snaps. "You're going to take the blame for her." Yara, my so-called sister, sobs on cue. "Sis, even if the Don kills you for it, Mom and Dad promise to take you back as their real daughter. It's an honor." Then my "fiancé" steps in. Chad Vance. The boy I was supposedly promised to as a kid. He wipes Yara's tears like she's made of glass. "You should be grateful you get to clean up Yara's mess," he growls at me. "One wrong word and I'll bury you." "Don Rocci has a temper. You beg. You grovel. Hell, strip and crawl into his bed if you have to. He is not touching Yara's family. Got it?" I freeze. Wait. They want me to beg my sulking, stormed-out-of-the-house… husband? So the birthday gift was for me? My cheap little bastard was actually trying to make up? I almost laugh out loud. They're literally driving me home. And maybe the sulky idiot will feel bad the second he sees me and drop the whole fight. Meanwhile my parents keep spraying spit in my face. "Do you know what the Rocci name means? If Yara catches heat for this, her life is over!" "You're a tough little street rat. You can take a beating. Yara's delicate. She was raised right. Not like you." Yara throws herself into Chad's arms. "Chaddy, I didn't mean it. I was just trying to wipe the Don's wife's gift and my hand slipped…" Chad strokes her hair. Then he glares at me. "Estella Lane. Pull one stunt, and I'll make sure you can't breathe in Ashford City. I'll bankrupt that little garbage company of yours by morning." Little garbage company. I own 99 publicly-traded companies. Any one of them could buy the entire Vance family twice over. I bite my cheek to keep from smiling. "So how exactly do you want me to make it up to him?" Yara drops the tears the second I fold. Chin up. Full brat mode. "The Don is a monster. Cruel. Sadistic. Famous for it." "He hits you, you take it. He tells you to kneel, you kneel. Until he's done." Mom pipes in. "You're pretty enough. Maybe once he's used you up, he'll leave our family alone." "Then we'll take you back. Give you a proper wedding." Yara traces circles on Chad's chest. "Sis, I know it's hard. But you're the older one. You're supposed to give in." "If you don't come back… Mom and Dad will set up a nice little shrine for you. Light a candle every year." Wow. They're already planning my funeral. Whatever spark of joy I had about finding my real family dies right there. Fair enough. People who threw away a baby twenty years ago aren't suddenly saints today. Chad flicks a photo at my face. "Take a good look. That's Don Rocci. Damiano Rocci. Heir to the Rocci Family." Deep eyes. Sharp jaw. Painfully handsome. Also, my runaway husband. The one who won't pick up my calls. Damiano has a temper. Petty. Holds grudges forever. We fought because I was too busy taking my company public to hang out with him. So he stormed off. And this whole time, the little brat was still shopping for my birthday gift. God, he's such a tsundere. I tuck the photo away and force my voice to shake. "Will he… kill me?" Dad snorts. "Depends how good you are. Now move!" I head for the door. Chad grabs my arm. "Wait!"

Chad looks me up and down, suspicious. "You're not planning to run, are you?" I nearly laugh in his face. Run? I'm going home. Why would I run? But Chad leans in close. "I'm warning you, Estella. I know your type." "Girls raised in the gutter. Slippery. Two-faced. Always working an angle." "And drop the fantasies. Yara is my fiancée. Not some feral runaway like you. Don't even look at me." Cute. I have a gorgeous, terrifying, obsessed husband at home. And this frog thinks I'm eyeing him? Chad shoves me into the car anyway. Yara clings to his arm, all sugar. "Chaddy, take me too. I can't be apart from you that long." "What if she seduces you on the way? I couldn't stand it." Chad flicks her nose. "Dummy. Only you. I'd never touch trash like that." "I heard she slept her way to the top. God knows how many men have had her." Yara insists on riding along. She says she needs to keep an eye on me so I don't wreck the family's plan. Chad watches me in the rearview mirror. Pure contempt. "Estella. Behave. The Rocci estate isn't a place a girl like you gets to act up." Yara chimes in. "Don't worry, Chaddy. She wouldn't dare. Getting to run errands for me is the honor of her miserable life." I lean back and close my eyes. Not worth the breath. These people have skin thicker than bulletproof glass. The car climbs the hill. The white villa rises through the trees. I relax completely. I picked those sycamores myself. Damiano planted that whole bed of irises at the turn, just for me. God, it feels good to be home. I wonder if my sulky husband will forgive me on sight, once he sees the state I'm in. Yara catches the look on my face. She shrieks. "STOP THE CAR!" Chad slams the brakes. "Yara, baby, what? We're right there." Yara stares at me like she wants to skin me. "Look at her face. She looks like she's going to meet a lover. Not a punishment." She leans in, voice pure venom. "Estella. You think meeting the Don is your big chance? Gutter girl finally climbs the ladder?" I open my eyes. Calm. "You've got a wild imagination. You should write novels." "You DARE talk back?!" Yara turns red. She clings harder to Chad and switches on the baby voice. "Chaddy, she has no manners. If she pulls this attitude in front of the Don, we're all dead." Chad frowns. "Estella. Yara's right. Before we drop you off, we're going to teach you how to behave." He gets out. Yanks me from the car by the hair.

Yara waves at the second car behind us. Four of Chad's friends pile out. Sleazy grins. Cracking knuckles. Chad plants a foot on my back. Looks down at me. "Listen up, Estella. You be good today, or I swear to God..." Teaching me manners? On my own property? I sink my teeth into his calf. I dust myself off. Roll my wrist. Stand up. "So. You want to go?" One of his boys laughs and steps in. "Feisty. I like feisty. Makes it more fun." Chad grabs his leg. Then he swings back and smacks me across the face. Trash. All of them. I kick him straight in the crotch. He drops. Yara screams. "GET HER! HOLD HER DOWN!" They pile on. I'm pinned in seconds. Can't move an inch. Chad drags himself up, panting, and stomps on my head. "You ungrateful piece of trash! Who do you think you are?!" Yara comes flying over. "You bitch! You hurt my Chaddy!" She pulls a switchblade from her purse and points it at my cheek. "Sis, your face is way too pretty. What if you actually catch the Don's eye and forget your job?" "So. Let's help you remember. Let's remind you what you actually are." The blade opens my cheek. "Sis. Don't you think 'whore' would look cute carved right here?"
