For six years, Elise waited patiently for Julian, believing his rigid schedules were simply part of who he was. He missed her birthday, ignored her after a car accident, and canceled their anniversary trip whenever work demanded it. But when Nora, Elise’s old roommate, arrives at Julian’s institute, his carefully protected schedule suddenly changes for her. Heartbroken, Elise ends their relationship and leaves for a year-long exchange program in Copenhagen—taking with her the engagement ring Julian never knew about. Only after losing her does Julian realize how often he sacrificed the woman he loved. But Elise has already learned to choose herself.

Julian always said you needed a plan. He never agreed to anything at the last minute. His schedule was set six months in advance. Once something went into his navy leather planner, no one could change it. After six years of long distance, I was used to waiting my turn. On my birthday, he had an experiment to run. I sat alone with my cake until midnight. When a car accident left me with twelve stitches in my forehead, he had to accompany Professor Brennan to a conference in Washington. He never even came to the hospital. Everyone told me to be understanding. Only Nora, my college roommate, held me and raged on my behalf. "Elise, stop letting him off so easily. If he ever puts you last again, I'll make him regret it!" For our anniversary that year, I reserved three days in his planner six months ahead of time. I secretly bought a ring, planning to travel to his city and propose. But before I left, he sent me a message. "Professor Brennan called a last-minute meeting. Our plans are canceled. Next time, Elise." Then I spotted Nora in the reflection on the glass in his photo of the meeting room. I flew there that night. At the end of the institute's hallway, Julian was crouched in front of her, tying her shoelaces. That was when I understood. His plans could change. I had just never been worth changing them for. If there was never room for me in his plans, I didn't need a place in the rest of his life, either. ... The motion-sensor lights came on one by one along the hallway. Julian looked up and froze when he saw me. A moment later, he was in front of me, taking my hands. "Why are your hands so cold? The temperature drops at night. You never remember to wear enough." His voice was as gentle as ever. Then he frowned. "I told you today was canceled, didn't I? Why come all this way by yourself?" Nora drew her foot back. "Elise, if I'd known you were coming, I wouldn't have bothered Julian." Her smile was a little awkward. I looked at Julian. "I called. You didn't answer." "My phone was on silent for the meeting." He adjusted my scarf. "You could've texted when you got here. Why come all the way to the institute? Now I have to worry about you." I glanced down at Nora's neatly tied laces. "When did the meeting end?" "Ten, fifteen minutes ago." "So you had time for her, but no time to check your phone?" Nora rushed to explain. "Elise, please don't get the wrong idea. There was a last-minute problem with the apartment, and my shoelace came undone. Julian insisted on helping, but I could've done it myself." "Why are you apologizing for something so trivial?" Julian asked mildly. Then he looked at me. "She just got here. She doesn't know anyone. Of course I'm going to help." Back in college, when Julian first canceled on my birthday, Nora had been angrier than anyone. "He can be busy all he wants," she'd said. "Why does his girlfriend always have to be the one waiting?" Now she was the reason he'd canceled on me. "When did you transfer here?" "This month. For a joint project." I turned to Julian. "You already knew?" "Why didn't you tell me?" He ruffled my hair. "I was going to tell you when you came. Are you going to get upset over this, too?" I took a step back. "So you actually canceled today for her?" Nora quickly tugged his sleeve. "Julian, why don't you stay with Elise? I'll be fine on my own. I can keep looking for an apartment tomorrow." Julian's frown deepened. "You have to be in the lab at eight tomorrow morning, and you still haven't found a place. You can't keep living in a hotel." Then he took my hand. "Elise, come on. It's her first time here. She only needs help for a couple of days." "I'll pick you up at the hotel at seven tomorrow and bring cinnamon rolls from that place you love. How does that sound?" A question slipped out. "What about the first time I came here?" He paused. "Four years ago, I got to Central Station at eleven at night. You told me to use the map on my phone." I'd dragged two suitcases around for over an hour that night. Later, he'd told me the regular lab meeting was already scheduled. No one could change it at the last minute. Julian was quiet for two seconds, then gave me a helpless smile. "Baby, how long ago was that?" He squeezed my fingers. "I know I wasn't good to you back then. Haven't I been trying to do better?" He was doing better. Just not for me. He walked me to the elevator. "Go back to the hotel. I'll come find you once Nora's settled." "Elise, do you want to come with us?" Nora asked softly. Julian answered for me. "She's tired. I'll get her a car." Before the elevator doors closed, I saw him holding the door-open button for Nora, making sure the doors wouldn't close on her. He had patience for people. I had just never been one of them. Back at the hotel, I took the black ring box from the bottom of my suitcase. Two letters were engraved inside the band: E and J, with a tiny ampersand between them. E for Elise. J for Julian. I'd planned to slip it onto his finger myself the next day. But that night, I suddenly stopped looking forward to tomorrow.

Julian arrived on time the next morning, carrying a paper bag from the bakery. He frowned at my swollen, red eyes. "Were you crying last night?" "No." He sighed and put the bag in my hands. "Elise, there's nothing going on between Nora and me. She's your friend and my colleague." "Are you still upset?" "No." He visibly relaxed. "I knew you'd be reasonable." Over breakfast, he slid the day's itinerary across the table. The riverside walk, the used-book market, and the little restaurant I'd had bookmarked forever. He'd even reserved a table by the window. "You've wanted to go for ages, right?" He smiled at me. "I'm all yours today." Then his phone rang. Nora had cut her hand in the lab, and a colleague had taken her to the hospital. On the other end, she was still trying to talk him out of coming. "Julian, don't come. Elise came all this way. Stay with her." Julian frowned. "Don't worry about that. Wait for me." He picked up his coat. "Someone's already with her," I said. "Why do you have to go?" "She just moved here, and she's afraid of blood." "What about when I had that car accident last year?" He stopped. "Elise, don't drag up the past." "I had twelve stitches in my forehead. You said you couldn't change your plans." Julian came over and crouched in front of me. "Didn't I already apologize for that?" "Clara was with you, and the doctor said your life wasn't in danger." He held my hand, his voice gentle. "If I hadn't been worried, would I have stayed up all night?" "Nora has someone with her now, too." He was silent for a few seconds. "We're the only people she really knows here. You have Clara. You have Theo. She doesn't." I pulled my hand away. So his rules could bend. Just not for me. His phone lit up with a message from Nora. "Julian, you really don't have to come. I can manage." Julian picked up his coat and bent to kiss my forehead. "Don't overthink it. I'll be right back. I promise I'll spend today with you." At two that afternoon, he said Nora was fine, that it was only a scrape and he'd be back soon. At three, another message came. She had a slight fever. We wouldn't make it to the used-book market. At seven, he canceled the restaurant reservation. Nora was sick and needed company. His last message read: "Come on, don't be upset. I'll bring you a chestnut Mont Blanc tonight." He returned at ten thirty with the dessert. He pulled me into his arms. "Tomorrow afternoon. I promise. You'll have me for the whole afternoon." I caught the smell of disinfectant on him. "I thought you couldn't just change your plans." "Once in a while is fine." "What counts as once in a while?" Julian's hand went still. "Elise, Nora's your friend. Who are you trying to compete with here?" Who? Last year, twelve stitches hadn't been enough to move his meeting. Today, a scrape on Nora's hand had wiped out his entire schedule.

On the third afternoon, Julian finally had time. He ate with me, took me for a walk, and instinctively drew me to the side away from traffic when we crossed the street. Maybe he still cared about me. That evening, Professor Brennan arranged an impromptu dinner for the lab. "Want to come?" Julian asked. "You're always saying you want to meet the people in my life." "Would that be okay?" He pinched my cheek. "You're my girlfriend. Why wouldn't it be?" When we arrived at the restaurant, Nora had only a thin strip of gauze wrapped around her right hand. She smiled as soon as she saw me. "Elise, I'm so sorry about yesterday. It was barely a scratch, but Julian insisted on staying until the nurse took out my IV. He wouldn't listen to me." Julian pulled out my chair. "Why explain all that?" "I don't want Elise getting the wrong idea," Nora said with a smile. Julian glanced at me. "She won't." His navy planner lay in front of Nora. She was writing in it with his pen. Back in college, I'd used that planner as a writing pad for an assignment once. It was the first time he'd ever snapped at me. "That's my planner. Don't just touch it." I went over. "What are you writing?" Nora immediately put down the pen. "The project schedule. Julian's been so busy lately. I'm afraid he'll forget something." She looked at me and lowered her voice. "Does it bother you when other people touch his things? I'm sorry. I didn't know." But Julian handed the pen back to her. "It's fine. Keep going." "I thought you didn't let anyone touch your planner," I said. "She's helping me organize my work schedule." He squeezed my hand. "It's different with you." Nora turned the page. "My follow-up is next Friday. You don't have any meetings after three, right?" "I'm free after three." "Should I put it down, then?" She looked at me again. "You don't mind, do you, Elise?" Before I could answer, Julian said, "Why would she mind?" Nora smiled. "True. You two have been together for six years. I'm the outsider who has to watch her step." A colleague beside her teased, "You? An outsider? Getting Julian to make time at the last minute used to be harder than getting funding approved." Nora hurriedly waved them off. "Don't say that. Elise will get the wrong idea." Julian didn't deny it. He just pushed the planner closer to her. "Write it on the right. Leave Saturday alone." I'd spent six years learning to follow his rules. She'd been here less than a month, and she could change them with a stroke of his pen. During dinner, someone mentioned my exchange program abroad. Julian immediately looked up. "You haven't accepted, have you?" "Not yet." He relaxed. "Then don't. A year is too long." Nora smiled. "True. Elise can barely stand being away from you. If she went abroad for a year, she'd miss you every single day." Then she turned to me. "But it's such a rare opportunity. If it were me, I'd probably hate to pass it up." "Do you want to go?" Julian asked. Before I could answer, he ruffled my hair. "But I know you couldn't bear to leave me." Laughter rippled around the table. After dinner, Nora caught up with me outside. "Elise, does it bother you that I've been asking Julian for help so much?" "I don't want to trouble him, either. But he said your relationship was solid. You wouldn't fight over something this small." Her eyes crinkled with her smile. "I'm actually a little jealous. He trusts you so much." "Didn't you used to hate it when he put me last?" Her smile froze for a moment. "That was then. People change." Just then, Julian came out and handed her his planner. "Keep this for now. Remind me tomorrow morning to move Thursday's meeting to the morning." Nora took it and glanced at me again. "Don't be upset, Elise. It really just makes things easier for work." Did it? Was that really all it was?
