Willa Kemp’s sister claims she’s touch-starved. Somehow, only Willa’s boyfriends can help. Their family excuses every stolen kiss, every bedroom intrusion—until Willa dies waiting for someone to care about her instead. Waking years earlier with her first boyfriend still beside her, Willa gets another chance. She invites the whole family to his luxury mountain lodge for Labor Day weekend. This time, she’ll protect her relationship and let her relatives practice what they preach. After all, if a man is so easy to share, they shouldn’t mind offering their own.

My sister's condition had one remarkably specific symptom: she needed my boyfriends. Not a weighted blanket. Not a hug from our mother. My boyfriends. She called it touch starvation. Whenever I brought a man home, Sloane found a reason to climb into his bed or walk in on his shower. Afterward, she cried that she couldn't help herself. Our family always took her side. “It's a guy, Willa. You can find another one.” In my first life, I finally stopped introducing anyone until I was ready to get engaged. I thought one dinner would be safe. Sloane broke a dish, cut me with it, and fell into my fiancé's arms. While I bled on the kitchen floor, Mom told me to stop making things worse. “We'll take you to the ER when your sister calms down.” I died waiting. Then I opened my eyes with Theo Hale's hand in mine. My first boyfriend. My first chance to get this right. We were twenty-two again, standing at the bottom of my parents' stairs on the Friday before Labor Day. “Why does your sister keep looking at me?” Theo murmured. Sloane stood in the living-room doorway, studying him as though she'd found something in a store window that she intended to buy. The first time, I had laughed at his question. That night she had walked into the bathroom while he was showering. Theo was autistic; unexpected touch, shouting, and bright lights could overwhelm him. She ignored every request to leave. By the time our parents reached him, he could barely speak. His family took him home the next morning. Our relationship never recovered from what my sister and my parents did afterward. This time, I squeezed his hand. “You don't have to be alone with her. Ever.” Upstairs, I stayed while he started the shower. Within minutes, the bathroom doorknob began to turn.

The latch had never worked properly. I'd asked Dad to fix it for years. Outside, Sloane muttered, “Of course she gets the rich one.” I looked at Theo. He had heard her, too. The door opened. My sister stepped inside in a towel and stopped when she saw me sitting beside him on the edge of the tub, testing the water with my foot. “What are you doing here?” “Getting ready for bed. What are you doing here?” Her gaze moved back to Theo. I saw the moment she decided the audience wouldn't matter. “I'm sorry, Willa. It's happening again.” She lunged for him. Theo stood, caught my hand, and moved us aside. Sloane stumbled into the tub instead. Water splashed over the tile, and she screamed. Mom arrived first, wrapped a robe around her, and began stroking her hair. Dad, Aunt Pam, and our cousin Brooke crowded the doorway. “I couldn't help it,” Sloane sobbed. Mom looked at me. “Well, if something's already happened between them, you need to step back.” Theo's fingers tightened around mine. “Nothing happened,” I said. “She didn't touch him. He moved.” Aunt Pam shrugged. “He's a grown man. A little attention won't kill him.” “You can get another boyfriend,” Brooke added. “Sloane needs support.” Theo spoke before I could. “I didn't consent to that.” Nobody answered him. I smiled at my family. “Actually, Theo and I were talking about Labor Day. His family has a lodge in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We'd love to invite everyone.” The change was immediate. Mom asked about the spa. Pam wanted to know whether meals were included. Brooke reached for her phone to invite her boyfriend. Sloane kept looking at Theo. Apparently her condition didn't prevent long-term planning.

Aunt Debbie joined us with Brooke's boyfriend, Mason. Pam brought her husband, Rick. By Saturday morning, the family had turned our invitation into a free reunion weekend. On the drive, Mom offered an apology with all the responsibility carefully removed. “I misunderstood last night. But your sister wasn't herself.” Debbie nodded. “If Theo ends up with Sloane, he's still family. You wouldn't be losing him completely.” Theo was beside me with his headphones on. He had chosen the music himself. I was grateful he couldn't hear them. In my first life, Sloane had produced a vague letter about an attachment-related problem after sleeping with her best friend's boyfriend. Every adult in the family treated it as permission. Three years after Theo, she climbed into the bed of the lecturer I was dating. I woke to find my relatives discussing how best to let the two of them be together. They had called my tears selfish. At the lodge, Theo's family had reserved a private house with nine bedrooms. Mom and Dad took an upstairs suite. Debbie, Brooke, and Mason went to the third floor. Pam and Rick chose a ground-floor room beside the one Theo and I initially picked. The bedroom doors had old privacy latches. The connecting bathrooms were clearly marked, but everyone seemed much more interested in the hot tubs than the room plan. At lunch, Pam grinned at Sloane. “Behave at the spa, honey. Willa doesn't like sharing.” “I'll try,” Sloane said, looking down. “She shouldn't have to apologize for being ill,” Mom told me. “Of course not,” I said. “I just hope she knows whose room she's going into. There are a lot of men here.” Rick looked Sloane up and down. Pam laughed. “If it happens, it happens. We're not as uptight as you.” After the spa, she complained about the room's water pressure. Theo offered to swap. She accepted in front of everyone. Sloane was upstairs. She missed the exchange. Theo and I moved into the room on the left. Rick turned on the shower in the middle room. I stayed beside my boyfriend and listened.
