第1章
My husband sells my private photos for ninety-nine dollars a set.
I'm standing outside his hotel room when one of his friends asks whether that price includes me.
I pull out my phone and start recording.
The men inside burst out laughing.
"Seriously, Blake. Some guy in the comments wants to know what she charges for a night."
"Tell him to get in line," another man says. "You've got requests."
Then my husband laughs.
"Lauren doesn't know."
"And when she finds out?"
"She'll cry. She'll ask what she did wrong. Then she'll beg me not to leave."
This morning, an email from an address I don't recognize arrived in my work inbox.
No message.
Just a link.
The page had my face on it.
My body.
Our bedroom.
Pictures taken when I thought I was alone. Pictures taken when I thought I was safe.
Underneath them was a price.
$99.
For the past two weeks, men I've never met have been sending me messages. A client canceled a meeting without explanation.
Yesterday, one of my employees closed his laptop so quickly when I walked past that I thought he was looking for another job.
Now I know what I've been walking into every morning.
Blake told me he was playing poker here. I came to ask him who else had access to our bedroom.
And the man who put me there is laughing on the other side of this door.
"So when are you getting rid of her?" someone asks.
"Once Vanessa and I figure things out."
"Your wife owns a company. Don't walk away empty-handed."
"I'm not stupid. I'm her husband. I'll get my share."
His share.
Three years ago, Blake lost his job.
I told him we would be fine.
I picked up extra clients. Worked weekends. Paid the rent, his car insurance, his credit cards.
I built my design studio into a company with eleven employees.
He stayed home.
When I came back after midnight, he asked what we were having for dinner.
Two weeks ago, Vanessa Cole returned from London.
His college girlfriend.
The woman whose old photographs he never deleted.
Suddenly, Blake started getting up before noon. Buying clothes. Going to the gym. He even offered to come by my office and help.
I thought he was trying.
He was.
Just not for me.
"How'd you get the pictures?" another man asks. "She actually let you take those?"
"Cameras."
"What, in the bedroom?"
"And the bathroom."
A low whistle.
"She didn't notice?"
"She barely notices when I get a haircut. She comes home, showers, passes out."
They laugh again.
I look down at the wedding ring on my hand.
I bought both of ours.
"Vanessa's got you working," someone says.
Blake's voice softens.
"She understands me. She said she hated seeing me waste my life with someone who treats me like a dependent."
My phone shakes in my hand.
I steady it against the wall.
"Then why marry Lauren in the first place?"
"Bad timing. I needed help. She wanted a husband."
"That simple?"
"She kept telling me we were a team. I let her."
Someone knocks on the table.
"Your bet."
I hear chips slide forward.
Then another voice.
"What about tonight? Vanessa still bringing those guys?"
"Yeah."
"Your wife going to show?"
"I'll get her there."
"She knows it's a party?"
"She thinks I'm helping her find clients."
For a moment, I can't feel my fingers.
Blake mentioned a dinner yesterday. A networking opportunity. He said he was proud of me and wanted to help my company grow.
I kissed him.
I thanked him.
"Vanessa's handling the drinks," he continues. "Once Lauren loosens up, we'll get some better footage."
"What if she refuses?"
"She won't be in a position to argue."
One of the men laughs so hard he coughs.
"Man, I'd pay to see that. Your wife always looks like she's about to fire somebody."
"Wait until she's on her knees," Blake says.
I save the recording and walk toward the elevator.
Outside, I find a number I haven't called in far too long.
He answers before the second ring.
"Lauren?"
I press my hand over my mouth.
"Honey?"
"Dad."
His voice changes.
"What happened?"
I look back at the hotel.
"I want to come home."
第2章
Dad doesn't ask why I stayed away.
He doesn't say he warned me.
He says, "Where are you?"
I give him the hotel name.
"Are you hurt?"
"Not like that."
"Lauren."
The way he says my name nearly breaks me.
"I found something. I'm sending it to you."
I send the link.
Then the recording.
"Please don't play it where Mom can hear."
He's quiet for a moment.
"Where's Blake?"
"Upstairs."
"Stay away from him."
"I'm outside."
"Good. Nathan's in the city. I'm calling him now."
"Dad, there's something happening tonight."
I tell him.
"Listen to me. You don't have to go anywhere with that man."
"I know."
"Send Nathan the address. Let him handle it."
"I will."
"Your mother and I are here."
I close my eyes.
"Okay."
By the time I get back to the apartment, my phone has a message from Nathan Brooks.
Your father called. I'm available whenever you're ready.
I've known Nathan since I was seventeen. He used to drive my father to meetings. Now he oversees security for the family.
I send him the name of the bar Blake mentioned yesterday.
He calls immediately.
I answer from the hallway.
"Seven o'clock," I tell him. "I'll confirm the room."
"Are you alone right now?"
"Yes."
"Keep your phone with you. I'll meet you before you go inside."
I agree.
Then I unlock my apartment.
The television is still on.
A game is paused on the screen. There's a takeout container on the coffee table, beside an ashtray Blake promised he wouldn't use indoors.
I paid someone to clean this place on Tuesday.
It's Thursday.
In the bedroom, I stop beneath the smoke detector.
Is it there?
Or inside the clock?
I look at the shelf opposite the bed.
The little speaker Blake bought last month.
I turn away before I start searching everything.
This room used to be the only place where I could stop working. Stop thinking. Take off the clothes I wore to meetings and just be tired.
He took that, too.
I get my passport, my laptop, and the folder containing my company documents.
I put them in my work bag.
Then I sit on the couch and wait.
Blake comes home just after five.
He's on the phone.
"Tell them I've got it covered."
He sees me.
His expression changes so quickly that I almost doubt what I heard at the hotel.
"Hey, babe."
He ends the call.
"You're home early."
"So are you."
He bends to kiss me.
I turn my face.
His mouth brushes my hair.
"You okay?"
"Headache."
"Working too hard."
He says it with such easy concern.
As if he hasn't spent the afternoon telling strangers what he plans to do to me.
He drops his keys on the table.
"About tonight. Vanessa booked a private room. Seven o'clock."
"I don't want to go."
He pauses.
"You haven't even met her."
"I'm tired."
"Then get out of the house for a few hours. It'll do you good."
I look at the takeout container between us.
"I'd rather stay home."
His smile fades.
"Lauren, I already told her we were coming."
"Tell her I can't."
"She went out of her way for you."
"For me?"
"Yes. She knows people. Investors. Business owners. People who could actually afford what your company charges."
I stare at him.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing. I'm trying to help."
He sits beside me.
Not too close.
He knows how to do this. How to make himself sound reasonable while I feel difficult.
"You've been stressed about losing clients. I thought you'd appreciate it."
My stomach twists.
He knows.
Of course he knows.
He's the reason it's happening.
"Did you tell her that?"
"That business has been slow? Yeah. Why?"
I look away.
He takes it as surrender.
"Come on. One evening. Have a drink, meet a few people. You don't have to stay late."
"Who's going?"
"A few of her friends."
"Names?"
He gives a little laugh.
"What is this, a background check?"
"I'm asking."
"Grant. Derek. Some other guy. You don't know them."
"Do you?"
"A little."
He puts his hand on my knee.
I have to make myself stay still.
"Vanessa's excited to meet you."
"Is she?"
"She thinks what you've built is impressive."
I picture the room upstairs.
His friends laughing.
His voice saying, She wanted a husband.
"All right," I say.
He squeezes my knee.
"There you go."
I stand before he can touch me again.
At the bedroom door, he calls after me.
"Wear the black dress."
I turn.
"The fitted one. With the stockings."
I know the dress.
It's in one of the photographs.
Blake leans back on the couch.
"You look good in that."
I go into the bathroom and close the door.
For a while, I just stand there.
Then I take the dress off its hanger.
I don't change in this apartment.
I put it in a garment bag and tell Blake I'm getting ready at the office.
He barely looks up from his phone.
"Don't be late."
An hour later, I meet Nathan in the lobby of my building.
He takes one look at me.
"Lauren."
I shake my head.
If he's kind to me right now, I won't make it through the next sentence.
"Blake thinks I'm meeting him there."
"I want to confront him with Vanessa there. If I do it at home, he'll deny everything and blame her."
Nathan nods.
"My team will be inside. You can leave whenever you want."
"I want you close."
"I will be."
When I reach the bar, Blake is waiting by the entrance.
His eyes move down my dress.
For the first time all day, he looks pleased to see me.
"There she is."
He takes my bag before I can stop him.
I hold on.
"I've got it."
"Suit yourself."
He puts a hand against my back and guides me toward the private rooms.
"They're going to love you."
第3章
Vanessa hugs my husband before she says hello to me.
"Lauren. Finally."
She takes my hands.
Her nails are pale pink. Her smile is warm.
"I've heard so much about you."
"I'm sure."
She laughs as though I've made a joke.
"Come in. We're all dying to meet you."
There are three men in the room.
One sits with his jacket open and his legs spread. Another is holding a phone. The third looks me up and down before glancing at Blake.
Blake gives him a small nod.
"This is Grant," Vanessa says. "He works in finance. Derek owns an agency. And Paul's in tech."
No last names.
No company names.
Grant raises his glass.
"So this is the wife."
Blake smiles.
"In the flesh."
Paul laughs.
I keep my eyes on Vanessa.
She leads me to the couch.
"Sit here. Let me get you something."
"Water's fine."
"Oh, come on. We're celebrating."
She picks up a champagne flute from the side table.
The others already have drinks.
Mine has been waiting.
"I brought this back from France," she says. "You have to try it."
"No, thank you."
Her hand stays out.
Blake takes the flute from her and holds it toward me.
"One glass, Lauren."
"I don't want it."
"It's champagne."
"I can see that."
He lowers his voice.
"Don't start."
Vanessa gives a soft laugh.
"It's fine. We can find you something else."
Blake sets the flute directly in front of me.
Close enough that I have to move it to put my bag down.
I keep my bag in my lap.
Derek points at my dress.
"Black suits you."
"Thank you."
"Better than the white shirt."
My fingers tighten around the strap.
"What white shirt?"
For a moment, nobody speaks.
Then Blake laughs.
"Probably something on your website."
My website has one photograph of me.
I'm wearing a navy suit.
Derek takes a drink.
"Must be."
Vanessa sits on Blake's other side.
"So. Tell us about your company."
I give her the short version.
She nods in the right places.
Grant watches my legs.
Paul checks his phone, then looks at me, then checks it again.
"Any big clients?" Vanessa asks.
"A few."
"Blake says things have been difficult lately."
I turn to him.
He shrugs.
"I told you. She wants to help."
"How thoughtful."
Vanessa touches my wrist.
"We all know how hard it is for women in business."
Behind her, Paul smiles at his screen.
I wonder if I'm on it.
The thought makes the room feel smaller.
I stand.
"I'm going to get some water."
Blake catches my wrist.
"We have drinks."
"I asked for water."
"Sit down. I'll get it."
His fingers stay around my wrist until I sit.
Then he lets go.
He doesn't get up.
Vanessa lifts her flute.
"To new beginnings."
The men raise theirs.
Blake picks up the glass in front of me.
He puts it in my hand.
"Don't embarrass me."
I set it down.
"I said no."
His face changes.
Not much.
Enough.
Vanessa watches him.
Grant sets his glass on the table.
"Your wife always this uptight?"
Blake laughs.
"She runs a company. She thinks she runs everything."
"I'm sitting right here."
"I know where you're sitting, Lauren."
He turns to Vanessa.
"Sorry about this."
She pats his arm.
"It's okay."
I reach into my bag and send Nathan a message.
Stay close.
Blake notices the movement.
"Who are you texting?"
"My office."
"You're always working."
I put the phone away.
Derek leans forward.
"Let's do something more interesting."
Vanessa smiles.
"What did you have in mind?"
"A game."
Paul puts his phone facedown.
"What kind?"
"Dares. Nothing complicated."
"I'm not interested," I say.
"Relax," Blake tells me. "You haven't heard the rules."
Grant looks at Vanessa.
She gives the smallest shrug.
Then he reaches into his jacket and takes out a folded stack of bills.
He drops it on the table.
"Five hundred."
I look at the money.
Then at him.
"For what?"
He gestures toward the floor beside his chair.
"Start by taking off your shoes."
Blake looks at the cash.
He doesn't look at me.
"Come on, Lauren," he says. "Don't make this awkward."
