A leaking pipe led me to three hidden tunnels beneath our home. Each connected to a woman I trusted: my husband’s childhood friend, my deputy, and my best friend. They’d been watching secret recordings from our bedroom, while my inheritance paid for their houses. When I tried to leave, my husband threatened my career. I thought I’d uncovered his worst betrayal. Then a little boy ran into the room wearing the pendant I’d bought for the son he told me had died.

第1章

The night a pipe burst beneath our house, I found three doors behind the basement shelves. One led to my husband's childhood friend, Felicity. One led to my deputy at work, Julia. The third led to my best friend, Morgan. We lived on a hillside estate outside New York. I'd known there were old service passages beneath the properties. I hadn't known my husband had renovated them into private entrances to three neighboring houses. A tablet beside the doors was replaying our bedroom. Our bedroom. The night before. Messages scrolled across the recording. Morgan made a joke about knowing me better than anybody. Felicity placed a bet. Julia asked what would happen if I ever found the tunnels. Adrian's reply appeared. She won't leave. And if she does, let her. I can replace a wife. Not you three. Below the tablet were payment records. The houses. The construction. The recording equipment. All purchased with money my parents had left me before the wedding. I photographed everything and contacted a lawyer. She told me to preserve the device, leave the scene intact, and get somewhere safe. An emergency plumber isolated the leak without entering the passages. At the front door, I met all four of them. Morgan laughed at my suitcase. Adrian saw the tablet. “Leave that.” I started recording audio on my phone. He offered to delete the video. When I said it wouldn't make this disappear, he reminded me I was signing a major contract with his company the following morning. “Do you want your colleagues seeing it?” I tried to pass him. Morgan grabbed my wrist. I pushed her off, and she scraped her arm against the wall. Adrian slapped me. He hesitated when he saw the blood at my mouth. Then Morgan reminded him about the tablet. He took it. Julia smashed it on the floor. The other two stamped on the screen. Adrian led Morgan out to have her wrist checked. Nobody asked about my face. I sent the recording to my lawyer and left for the office. I'd spent three years on the Harbor Point project. I wasn't going to let him take that, too.

My assistant stopped me outside the conference room. Adrian's company had suspended the signing. They alleged I'd obtained confidential pricing through our marriage. Inside, a cropped video showed me in our bedroom holding a document. “Is this the final contract amount?” I asked on screen. Adrian nodded. The date and the approval stamp had been cut away. I switched off the display. “That was after the bid closed and negotiations finished. The full recording will show it.” My employer said I couldn't lead the project while the allegation remained unresolved. Adrian was threatening to pull the entire contract unless I was replaced. I called him on speaker in front of the executives. Julia stood behind him when he answered. “You sent a recording from our bedroom to my office?” “Only the relevant part. I had the personal material removed.” He expected credit for that. I demanded a correction. “Withdraw the divorce filing and stop pursuing the houses,” he said. “Then we'll correct it.” I told him I was recording the call. His gaze flicked toward the executives beside me. “Record it,” he said. “You still need my signature tomorrow.” When I refused, he instructed my employer to appoint Julia. She smiled over his shoulder. She'd worked under me for three years. Of course she understood the project. My employer closed the folder in front of me. I gave our legal team a preservation notice for the original email, attachment, and meeting record. By the time I reached my office, my name had vanished from the project display. Julia's was there instead.
