I'm someone with high emotional needs. I can't live without the love and closeness of the people I care about. So when Kevin Henson brought up divorce again, I lost it completely. I grabbed the water I'd just boiled off the table and hurled it at his feet, past caring. "You want to see that woman again, don't you?" He only looked at me, calm as ever. "Georgina Winfield's only here today. I have to go." A year ago, Kevin asked me for a divorce for the first time, over that hostess who worked the drinks at a nightclub. I refused, absolutely refused. We fought so hard that both of them ended up in the hospital. Back then, my best friend sat with me night after night. And my mother threatened to kill herself if he didn't come home to his family. In the end, Kevin gave in. He cut off all contact with that woman and went back to being the good husband he used to be. I thought our life had finally gotten back on track. Until today. He brought up divorce again and walked out without looking back. I followed quietly. Before I pushed the door open, I'd already pictured a dozen ugly scenes, all of them ending in a screaming match. But what I saw through the gap in the door froze me where I stood. The woman I hated most was sitting right in the middle of them. My mother was beside her, peeling shrimp for her with such tenderness it hurt to watch. Kevin was gripping her hand tightly. "Georgina, don't go back to that other world. Stay here, please?" The woman sighed. "I can only cross over for one day a month. Just getting to see you all is enough for me." My best friend wiped at her tears. "Doesn't love conquer everything? It's all because she keeps clinging on. She's the reason two people who love each other can't be together!" My mother's voice caught as she picked it up. "Thank God the you in that world grew up safe. I even pretended to kill myself to fool her, scared her half to death, but as long as it keeps you safe, there's nothing I wouldn't do." "If we could, how we'd love to cross over and be with you..." Something in me went slack. So it turned out my best friend's company, my mother's love, my husband coming back to me — all of it, every bit of it, was to protect another woman. Only my own heartbreak was the joke. The instant a tear struck the back of my hand, a voice sounded in my ear. "Do you want to go to another world, back to the family who truly loves you?" ... I dug my fingers hard into my palms. The sting of my nails biting into the flesh just barely held down the urge to kick the door open and go in. The voice was still echoing in my ear. I lowered my head and stayed silent for a long time. "Okay." A whole year of fighting for him. I was so tired. This time, I'd let them have what they wanted. "One day from now, the Southside nightclub. That's the point where the two worlds meet." The voice was gone. I backed away, one step at a time, into the stairwell. The dark swallowed me whole. I walked out through the gates of the complex, and the cold wind poured straight down my collar. It froze everything inside me stiff. I don't know how I made it home. I pushed the door open, and the whole apartment was full of the furniture Kevin had picked out for me. I curled up on the couch, and my tears soaked a wide patch into the throw pillow. My mind slowly blurred. In my dream, my mother held my hand, her eyes crinkled with a smile. The year I failed my SATs and fell into depression. She quit her job as an executive at a multinational firm and gave up half a lifetime of career. Every day she made me three meals, changing it up so I wouldn't tire of it, bringing them to my bed and feeding me one bite at a time. "Don't cry, Dar. If you didn't get in, then you didn't. Mom will take care of you for the rest of your life." And Kevin had severe claustrophobia. Once we got stuck in an elevator when it broke down, hanging halfway up the shaft. He was shaking all over, barely able to breathe. But when he saw me crying from fear, he forced himself calm, held me against him, and got through three whole hours in the dark. "Don't be scared, Darlene Winfield. I'll never let anything happen to you." He remembered every one of my periods. If I so much as frowned, he'd break out in a nervous sweat. That love was heavy, wrapping around me so completely there wasn't a crack for air. "You actually had an older sister. She got very sick at five and didn't make it." That one offhand thing my mother once said suddenly went loud in my ears. The next instant, the dream shattered. I dreamed again of the first time Kevin cheated. At the very start, it was the passenger seat of his car, pushed forward by three centimeters, and his phone, always turned facedown on the table when he came home. The moment I sensed something was wrong, my hands wouldn't stop shaking. I didn't want to believe it. How could the husband who'd throw away his own life for me be cheating? I held it in and watched him for two full weeks. In the end, I followed him and stopped outside a hotel. When I rushed in, their bodies were still locked together. I grabbed the lamp and hurled it at them. Kevin reacted in a flash. He yanked the blanket over and shielded Georgina completely beneath him. My fists, my palms, the base of the lamp, all of it landed on Kevin. From start to finish, Georgina wasn't hurt in the slightest. Kevin took my beating without flinching, lifted his head, and pointed at the door, his eyes bloodshot. "Get out!" Watching the way he shielded that woman with everything he had, I stood there gasping for breath. In that moment I thought, in despair, that I would never let them have it. Never... My eyes snapped open. Cold sweat had soaked through my nightclothes. At some point a blanket had been draped over me. Kevin was sitting beside the couch, looking down at me. For a second, I thought we'd gone back to the way things used to be. But the jasmine scent lingering at the tip of my nose reminded me. That was Georgina's scent. I stared at him, my eyes trembling faintly. "I agree to the divorce." He stared back, startled, trying to find some sign that I was faking, testing him. The next second, he leaned in and pulled me hard into his arms, blanket and all. "Don't say things you don't mean, Darlene. We're not getting divorced." "It's my fault. I shouldn't have lost my temper. I made your favorite, barbecue ribs. Come on, eat a little, hm?" He coaxed me, humbling himself. My fingers curled into the couch cushion without my noticing. When I said nothing, he ruffled my hair and went off to the kitchen on his own to warm up the food. I watched his back. My eyes fell on the phone on the coffee table. Ever since he came back to the family a year ago, that phone had had all its passcodes removed. A message notification chimed out of nowhere. But when I opened it, there was nothing new. My fingertip stopped. I searched for a long while and found a hidden second system. A whole new messaging app screen popped up. There was only one contact pinned at the top. The label: Wife. My breath caught, and a dense, dull ache spread across my chest. Then what about me? What was I?

I opened the message thread. "Kev, stop fighting with Darlene. I can only come over one day a month. Let her be with you the other twenty-nine days for me." Kevin's reply had come three minutes ago. "But I only want you with me... Being good to her makes me feel like I'm betraying you." "Be good. Listen to me." My fingertips were ice cold as I dragged numbly up through the messages. Hundreds of pages of them. All of it love, poured out to Georgina. "It got colder today. Is it cold in that world of yours?" "Passed a flower shop and saw jasmine, your favorite. Too bad I can't give them to you." He wrote her thousand-word love letters. He stayed up all night when he missed her, sending voice messages just to tell her he loved her. All of this, he had once given me too, holding nothing back. That was why I'd fallen apart the way I did a year ago when he first asked for the divorce. But now he had handed all that love to someone else, down to the last piece. More desperately than he ever had for me. I was about to close the app when I saw a familiar profile photo in the feed. My mother, and Abigail Delgado. But nothing had come through to my own messages. I closed my eyes and forced back the tears that wanted to fall. So they'd both blocked me. I opened my mother's newest post. In the photo, Georgina sat with her head bowed, drinking soup. The caption: "Heaven has mercy. My sweet daughter can finally come home and share a meal with me." And Abigail's post. A selfie of her and Georgina, heads pressed together. The caption: "The best big sister. Even across worlds, I'll always be by your side." Kevin had liked it and commented below: "She's got no appetite today. Cheer her up for me." I stared at the words. Something in my head blew wide open. It was the first time I'd looked, really looked, at Georgina's face. Her eyes and brows did carry something of my mother in those old photos of her youth. So. She really was the sister from another world. Then what about the me in that other world? Was I doing all right? And why did she keep crossing over into this one, again and again, to take everything I had? "What are you looking at, so caught up in it?" Kevin came out carrying the barbecue ribs. When he saw the screen glowing in my hand, the smile froze on his face. But he only stalled for a second. Then he untied his apron, easy and unbothered. "You saw," he said, his tone cool and mild. "Yes," I answered, my throat dry. "Then I won't hide it from you anymore." Kevin set a rib in my bowl. "Gina doesn't have long in this world. I don't want to put any weight on her." "She's always felt like she's the one who wrecked our marriage. She feels guilty about it. So, Darlene, cooperate a little." I stared at the rib in my bowl, its glaze red and shining, while my stomach turned over. "And if I don't?" Kevin set down his chopsticks. He was still smiling, but the words came out cruel. "You don't have a choice." "Your mother and Abby are both on Gina's side. If you make a scene, you're the only one who loses." "Darlene, you can't survive without us. Isn't that right?" Once, that was true. It wouldn't be anymore. I looked at him. Less than half an hour later, the doorbell rang. My mother and Abigail rushed in, clearly summoned by Kevin's message. They were tense, guarded, and underneath it a careful, coaxing eagerness. As if I were a bomb that might go off any second. My mother came straight to me and took my hands. "Dar, Kev told you everything, didn't he? Don't hold it against Gina." "She's had such a hard time in that world. There was an accident in the family, and she dropped out and worked to hold the whole household together, all on her own. She barely made it through alive." "We just feel for her. Can't we share a little of our love with her?" Abigail leaned in too, her voice edged with blame. "Darlene, don't be so selfish. Gina only comes one day a month. What is there for you to put up with? You've already had more than enough as it is!"

I pulled my hand out of my mother's grip. "In the beginning, wasn't she the one who wrecked my marriage?" A year ago, how had they cursed Georgina? They'd called her shameless, a homewrecker, and even gone with me to the hotel to slap her around. "So how is she the victim now?" My mother's face went stiff. Abigail's voice shot up, urgent. "It was a misunderstanding! Someone else drugged Kevin, and Gina was set up too. She's a victim as well!" The chat logs between Kevin and Georgina flashed through my mind. At the very start, it was plainly Georgina who, for money, had spiked Kevin's drink on her own. Afterward Kevin had gripped her throat and warned her that if she ever talked, he'd kill her. At the beginning, even Kevin had despised her. I didn't bother arguing. What was the point of fighting over any of it? They could flip black into white just to whitewash Georgina. "Do whatever you want." I stood and walked toward the door. Kevin stepped over in one stride and blocked it. "Where are you going?" "I already said it. Do whatever you want. I don't care anymore." My mother ran over and clamped her arms around my waist. "Dar, don't do anything stupid! Are you going to go settle the score with Gina? I'm begging you, don't go hurt her!" Abigail blocked the door too, watching me warily. "Darlene, drop the act. Someone like you, who can't survive without other people, there's no way you don't care." "You're definitely planning to go corner Gina at the nightclub, aren't you?" I looked at them. The hole in my chest that had been leaking air this whole time split wide open. Kevin seized my wrist and shoved me hard, back into the room. "Since you can't calm down, stay in your room and think it over." I stared at the shut door and shouted through it. "I don't care anymore!" "I won't cause her any trouble, and I won't beg for your love anymore. Let me out!" Abigail's cold sneer came from the other side. "Who's going to believe you? You go to pieces if you're alone for a single day. You care?" My mother sighed. "Darlene, stop sulking. Just stay in there and really reflect. Once Gina leaves tomorrow, we'll let you out." The footsteps faded away. I slid down the door until I was sitting on the floor. It was fine. I'd have another family soon. There, I'd have people who truly loved me. I wouldn't need their fake charity anymore. I don't know how much time passed. Then came the sound of the keypad lock at the front door being unlocked. "Kev, Mom, Abby, are you all here?" The three of them rushed to meet her at once. "Gina, what are you doing here? The wind's so strong out there, why didn't you let me come get you?" Kevin's voice had gone gentle again. "I came to see Darlene. Whatever went wrong, it's all my fault. I have to at least apologize to her." Georgina's voice was thick with tears. "Apologize for what! None of this is your fault!" my mother said, aching for her. "That's right, Gina. Darlene's in a temper, don't go provoking her. She'll hurt you." Abigail chimed in. "She won't. Darlene's a good girl. She'll forgive me." The footsteps stopped outside my door. The door was pushed open.

Georgina stood in the doorway, watching me with red-rimmed eyes. Kevin and the other two crowded protectively behind her. "Darlene, I'm sorry." She stepped closer and dropped her voice. "The truth is, the me in that other world never suffered a day." "And you? You died a long time ago. Mom and Dad left every cent to me. I just wanted to come see what it felt like to take everything you have all over again." The corner of her mouth curled into a taunting smile. The fury shot up in my chest. I raised my hand. But halfway up, I stopped. I couldn't hit her. The moment I did, in the eyes of these three, I'd be the unforgivable one. I forced the strength out of my arm, meaning to lower my hand. Then Georgina let out a sudden scream. She threw herself backward and slammed hard onto the floor. "Darlene! What are you doing!" Kevin lunged at me. He seized my throat and shoved me hard against the wall. The back of my head cracked against it, and the room spun. "Darlene Winfield! How can you be so vicious!" My mother rushed over and slapped me across the face. Abigail helped Georgina up, cradling her, and looked at me with disgust all over her face. "Darlene Winfield, you make me sick!" Kevin let go, took in how pale I was, and something like regret flickered in his eyes. "Darlene, she only gets one day a month. Can't you even give her that one day?" "Once she leaves tomorrow, I'll make up all twenty-nine of the rest to you. Cause whatever scene you want, I'll let you have your way from now on. But not today. Sit here and cool off by yourself." "Gina, let's go." They gathered around Georgina and left the house. I leaned against the wall and slid down to the floor. My stomach twisted with pain, and cold sweat broke out on my forehead. In the middle of the night, my fever came. Burning all over, and yet freezing at the same time. I fumbled for my phone and called Kevin. It rang for a long time before he picked up. In the background were the happy laughs from the private room, and Georgina's coy little voice. "Kevin... I have a fever... my stomach hurts..." I gasped weakly. There was silence for two seconds on the other end. Then a low sigh from Kevin. "Darlene, stop it. Be good and take your medicine, get some sleep, and I'll come home first thing in the morning to be with you. No more scenes tonight. Be good, okay?" The call cut off without a shred of mercy. I looked at the screen going dark, and the tears at the corners of my eyes dried up completely. Gritting my teeth, one hand clamped over my stomach, I called 911, and the paramedics broke in the door. The next evening. I forced myself out of the hospital. The Southside nightclub. Bracing myself against the wall, I made my way down the steps one at a time. In the middle of the dim basement, a blue light circled and shifted. Four people stood in front of it. Kevin held Georgina tightly, his eyes red. My mother clutched Georgina's hand, wiping at her tears without stopping. Abigail was crying so hard she could barely catch her breath. "Gina, come back early next month. We'll all be waiting for you," Kevin said, his voice gone hoarse. "Why can't we just cross over with you and stay..." Georgina nodded sweetly. They said goodbye as if they were being torn apart forever. I stood in the shadows and watched it all. There was nothing left stirring in me. I walked straight forward, toward that blue light. "Who's there?!" Kevin whipped around, on alert. My mother and Abigail turned too. The instant they saw it was me, Kevin's brow knotted. "How did you find your way here? You still haven't caused enough trouble?" My mother jabbed a finger at my face. "Won't you be happy until you've driven your sister to her grave! Get back home this instant!" I didn't stop. Half my body had already stepped into the blue light. Kevin was the first to sense something was wrong. "What are you doing?!" "You can't go through, we've tried, or we'd have gone long ago!" The wind of the time tunnel lifted my hair. I looked at them, and the corner of my mouth curved into a smile of release. The pull began to drag at my body. "Maybe I can. Since you all love her so much... this world, I'll leave to you." "It's only that the other world..." The next second, the three of them stood frozen, staring at the spot where I'd vanished.
